Finding center square

To draft Snow Crystals with this method, draw a square on graph paper and then locate and draw in the center square. Draft an eight-pointed star in the center square using the methods you learned in Class 440. Continue drafting portions of eight-pointed stars in the four corner quadrants.

Snow Crystals

You could have technically located all the needed templates just from the star in the center square or in any one quadrant. We know that the central square is equal to one-fourth of the total block, so just drawing the center and one corner would be all you need.

We are going to do one more—the Carpenter’s Wheel, also known as Dutch Rose, Double Star, Broken Star, or Star and Diamond. You will see that the templates are found in the same way as for Snow Crystals, and you really don’t have to draft the entire block. However, we think it is a good idea to see how all these pieces come together on paper.

Start by finding the central square. Draft the eight-pointed star within it. Connect the midpoints on all four sides to establish the corner triangles.
